What is an Urban Yard?
Urban Yard is a handcrafted wooden dog potty tray designed to be filled with real grass and potting soil, giving your dog a natural place to toilet on a balcony, patio, or small outdoor space.
Is the grass real?
Yes. We use real living grass, not artificial turf.
Does the grass need sunlight?
Yes. For best results, the grass should receive 4–5 hours of sunlight per day. For balconies with limited sun, LM Berea is usually the better option.
How often does the grass need to be replaced?
With regular watering and occasional trimming, many customers get several months of use from one grass installation. Lifespan depends on sunlight, watering, drainage, and how often your dog uses it.
Will the Urban Yard smell?
Real grass and soil generally produce less odour than synthetic grass systems when maintained properly. Removing solid waste regularly and watering the grass helps keep it fresh.
Is there drainage underneath?
Yes. Each Urban Yard includes drainage holes and airflow underneath to help prevent liquid from sitting in the tray.
What sizes are available?
-80 x 80 x 10 cm- ideal for small dogs & puppies.
–90 × 90 × 10 cm – ideal for small to medium breeds.
-100 × 100 × 10 cm – ideal for medium breeds
Custom sizes are available on request.
Can I use it indoors?
Urban Yard is designed primarily for balconies, patios, and outdoor apartment spaces because it contains real soil and grass.
Do you deliver outside Johannesburg?
Yes. We deliver throughout South Africa.
Does the delivery include grass and soil?
-Johannesburg: Grass and soil can be included.
-Outside Johannesburg: Grass and soil are not included due to courier restrictions and the perishable nature of live grass.
What do I need to buy if I’m outside Johannesburg?
You will need potting soil and instant lawn (LM Berea or Kikuyu). We will guide you on the correct amount to purchase.
How long does manufacturing take?
Manufacturing usually takes 3–4 business days once payment has been confirmed.
Is the wood treated?
Yes. The wood is sealed with a pet-safe, eco-friendly sealer for added protection against moisture.
Can the tray be moved easily?
Yes. The tray can be moved when empty, and optional lockable wheels are available as an add-on.
Can puppies use it?
Absolutely. Urban Yard is great for puppy toilet training, especially for apartment living.
How do I maintain the grass?
-Water regularly
-Trim when needed
-Remove solid waste promptly
-Ensure adequate sunlight
What happens if my dog damages the grass?
Because the grass is a natural living product, wear and tear is considered normal maintenance and not a manufacturing defect.
